What Does Algebra Cover?
Algebra is the foundation for almost every higher math course. The word comes from the Arabic al-jabr (“the reunion of broken parts”), and the subject uses symbols — usually letters like x and y — to represent numbers and relationships.
Elementary algebra (Algebra 1) covers the basics: variables and expressions, the order of operations, solving linear equations and inequalities, exponents, polynomials, factoring, and an introduction to functions and graphing lines.
Advanced algebra (Algebra 2) builds on that with systems of equations, quadratic equations, radical and rational expressions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and more complex graphing — preparing you for pre-calculus and college math.
A good algebra practice test mixes both levels so you can find weak spots quickly. Work the questions below, check the step-by-step solutions, then drill any topic you miss with the free worksheets.

Algebra Formulas You Should Know
- Slope: m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁).
- Slope-intercept: y = mx + b.
- Quadratic formula: x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ 2a.
- Difference of squares: a² − b² = (a − b)(a + b).
- Perfect square: (a ± b)² = a² ± 2ab + b².
- Exponent rules: xᵃ·xᵇ = xᵃ⁺ᵇ; (xᵃ)ᵇ = xᵃᵇ.
Tips to Ace Your Algebra Test
- Do the same operation to both sides of an equation.
- Watch your signs — a dropped negative is the most common mistake.
- Check by substituting your answer back in.
- Factor first for quadratics; use the formula only if it won’t factor.
