What Is Common Core Math?

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics define what students should know and be able to do at each grade. They are built on three principles — focus (spend more time on fewer, key topics), coherence (link learning across grades), and rigor (balance conceptual understanding, procedural skill, and application).

In grades 1–8 the standards are organized into domains such as Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten, Number & Operations—Fractions, Measurement & Data, and Geometry (with Ratios & Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions & Equations, Functions, and Statistics & Probability appearing in grades 6–8). The “major work” moves from addition and subtraction (K–2) to multiplication, division, and fractions (3–5), then to ratios, proportional reasoning, and algebra (6–8).
